Expectations for the major essay
Give your essay a clear structure
Use the first sentence to tell me what is interesting/important about your essay.
Define the key terms in the introduction.
Directly state what the scope of the essay is (e.g. This essay will focus on President Clinton’s health care policy in assessing the strengths and weakness of his presidency.)
Break the essay into sections, preferably with section headings used throughout the paper (around four sections would be about right for a 2,500 word essay).
Being analytical
Be analytical and develop an argument
The essay should develop an argument. This does not mean you need to be highly argumentative in each sentence of the essay rather that you need to work towards presenting an argument that is succinctly stated in the conclusion. Good essays will identify schools of thought on a topic or at the very least competing positions. Make sure you spend some time in your essay identifying the crucial points of disagreement between competing positions – for example if you were discussing the contentiousness of Bush’s 2000 election victory, you would give the key claims of both those who believed Bush won fairly and those who thought it an unfair victory.
Know the difference between scholarly and non-scholarly sources – and use them differently
Much of the material on the Internet and in US political magazines is highly partisan i.e. it presents principally one side of an argument to help promote a particular party, politician or cause. Such material is not considered scholarly. Your essay should include a balance between scholarly and non-scholarly material. Using non-scholarly material such as magazine articles and quotes from politicians will enliven your discussion and help you highlight certain points, but to analyse these points you will also need to use scholarly material such as academic journal articles and books, and policy and government reports.
