Understanding human nature is a key component of managing people.  At times you will have to maintain relationships with people you don’t like.  This is one of your hardest tasks of a manager.

Any skill, whether it be sport, art, or management requires continual analysis if it is to be improved.  This requires identification of your own behaviours that work, those that don’t work, and an acknowledgment of your personal tendencies.  However, in management, we don’t have the opportunity to see video replays of our performances, and this limits our ability to critique ourselves.  We are dependent on feedback from others, and the context of that feedback can blur objectivity.  Alternatively, we can assess ourselves, but our own perceptual biases can get in the way.  It is hard to see ourselves objectively.

In this course, you are required to complete a reflection exercise.  You must write a paper in three parts, with each part describing a difficult interaction you have had with another person in any aspect of your life. PLEASE NOTE: Don’t choose a topic that upset you so much it is likely to cause you distress while writing your assignment - The Human Ethics Committee would crucify me!

This is not a chance for you to criticise other people nor justify your actions.  You will learn nothing from that.  Even a good manager can improve and the point of this exercise is to find ways of improving, to consider broader explanations for workplace-social interactions and consider alternatives that you didn’t take at the time.  It may also be interesting to self-analyse why you didn’t consider other alternatives at the time.  The emphasis is 1.self analysis, 2.considering alternative explanations of behaviour in the workplace (or other social arena) and 3.a forum for considering alternative ways to deal with day-to-day issues.  This exercise is not an opportunity to attack others.  It is a tool to analyse your own behaviour, to consider different approaches to an interaction, or alternative explanations for problems that arise.  The marking guide will look for:

1.    Analysis of three interactions by using the concepts discussed in class and readings.  These concepts provide a framework for understanding social interaction. I will look for:

a.    Reference to a large number of concepts from the course material,
b.    Your writing shows full understanding of those concepts,
c.    The interactions you describe are appropriately linked to those concepts.
d.    Attempt is made to understand the other person

2.    Re-evaluation of how you dealt with the problem at the time, and with hindsight, how you could have done it better.

3.    When you deal with a problem, you normally attribute a cause to the problem and then seek a solution.  However, we frequently don’t have all the relevant information, and what we do have is often tainted.  I would like to see you, in hindsight consider other attributions (explanations for the problem) and what solutions you would have used.  In other words, I want to see you take broader analysis of situations when you have more time.

4.    Marks will also be given for the quality of the critique.  I want to see your thoughts considering options beyond what actually occurred, and of course, a good understanding of the course material linked to your day-to-day life.

5.    For one of the conversations, you must do a conversation tree showing how you would handle the conversation if you were put in that situation again.  For your conversation tree, state your goals of the conversation (ie: what you hope to achieve), statements from the other person that might arouse emotion in you (and your response), things that you have to say that might arouse their emotions –how can you avoid arousing their emotion?
