Compare two supermarkets and analyse their profit margins over the past 5 years
Evaluate whether supermarkets are still good investment opportunities based on your analysis.

This piece of coursework is to be submitted in 2 parts
 
Task 1   Preparation for Report   (Max 750 words)
 
From your research identify four possible supermarkets to use in your analysis. Rank your chosen companies explaining the advantages and disadvantages of using each in your analysis and why you have ranked them in the order you have. This part of the assignment can be prepared in a table format. 
 
Tips
 
You will be awarded marks for the breadth of your research. You may conclude that one of the four possible supermarkets would not be a good company for your analysis and marks will still be awarded as long as your research identifies the correct reasons for this

This part of the assignment should be submitted via Studynet by 9.30am on 15th Feb 2016. A hard copy is NOT required.
 
 
Task 2  (1,500 words +/- 10%)
 
Prepare a report on two supermarkets for a long-term investor, who wishes to know whether supermarkets are still a good long term investment.   The investor is looking for both capital growth and income from this investment.
 
The report should include
 
o Calculation of ratios,
o Interpretation of ratios, cash flow statement  and other information researched, as you see is relevant
o Demonstration of your understanding of the limitations of ratio analysis, with particular reference to information in this case and the needs of the long term investor. (Marks will NOT be awarded for general limitations of ratios, as described in accounting text books)
oConclusion and any recommendations which include details of any further information needed, both financial and non-financial.
